Hazing Prevention Education and Training Resources at UC Berkeley
Together we can prevent hazing, violence, and harm by becoming more informed about hazing, utilizing active bystander tools and other prevention strategies to interrupt and stop hazing when it is occurring, promoting ethical leadership, and creating a campus culture of belonging where hazing cannot exist.
Below you can learn how to request and access different hazing prevention trainings, workshops, and educational resources available on UC Berkeley campus.
Hazing Prevention and Bystander Intervention – Bears that CARE
Bears That CARE (BTC) is an active bystander initiative to make our campus safer. Through interactive workshops about bystander intervention, BTC educates and empowers individuals to effectively and safely intervene in potentially harmful or violent situations. We strive to create a community of care.
Our staff is composed of peer educators and staff facilitators. Peer educators provide workshops to student groups across campus and actively promote violence prevention through a variety of programs, while staff facilitators lead workshops for academic and student affairs departments.
Bears that CARE’s workshop on Hazing prevention explores how we can promote group bonding in a way that supports belonging instead of alienating or shaming and what you can do if you are noticing your friend is being hazed. In the Hazing Prevention workshop, you and your organization will learn the spectrum of hazing behaviors, alternative ways to bond as a group that are aligned with shared values and compassion, and how to utilize the CARE model to safely intervene as an active bystander to create a healthier campus community.

Ethical Leadership Certification Program
The Ethical Leadership Certification (ELC) program was developed in the Summer of 2020 with inspiration from Cornell University hazing prevention practices. Rather than teaching what not to do, this helps participants factor in their own choices on community building grounded in their values.
In this three hour, highly interactive workshop, facilitators guide participants through activities that examine and define their own values around leadership and inclusion. Participants deconstruct the idea of tradition and are challenged to create a new initiation or welcome activity that is based on their values. They also practice bystander intervention tools to engage with others in their organization who may not be acting in alignment with the values of the group. Participants of the ELC receive a certificate of completion signed by the Dean of Students.
