Resources for Natural Disasters

Update – January 2025: If you’re seeking resources specific to the L.A. region fires, Chancellor Lyons shared a resource document in his Jan. 9, message. Also see FAQs at the end of this page.

Resources for Natural Disasters

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and storms, can have far-reaching impacts on individuals and communities. Even if you are not directly affected, seeing the aftermath of these events may evoke a wide range of thoughts, emotions, and concerns. For students whose families or local communities have been impacted, the effects can be particularly challenging, making it harder to focus on academics or daily responsibilities.

You may feel distracted by thoughts about safety, family well-being, financial strain, or the loss of homes and belongings. These are natural responses, and you are not alone. The Dean of Students Office is here to provide you with resources, guidance, and support to help you navigate the challenges that come with natural disasters.

General Support

Financial Support

  • Learn more about  short-term emergency loans (link is external), or contact Cal Student Central (link is external) if you need assistance.
  • Support is available through the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office (FASO) Student Emergency Fund. Students who have been impacted should notify Cal Student Central via options outlined through their Services and Support Page. Students can identify in person, via case, over the phone, via callbacks, etc. Departments or other campus partners can consult with FASO (avcfinaid@berkeley.edu) if they are working with a student who has been impacted. Students do not need to be eligible for financial aid to receive access to these resources.
Funding through the FASO Student Emergency Fund is available for:

    • Expenses related to food and essential items like household goods, clothing, and books
    • Expenses related to transportation
    • Computer purchase
    • Tuition
    • Other emergency expenses not defined above

Emergency Preparedness

Knowing what to do, where to go, and the resources available in the event of a disaster is key to staying as safe as possible. Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency. Consider these steps to help protect yourself and your loved ones:

  • Sign Up for Alerts: Stay informed with real-time updates by registering for UC Berkeley WarnMe notifications.
  • Create an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents.
  • Know Your Plan: Familiarize yourself with your campus’s emergency procedures and evacuation routes.

Stay Informed

Stay proactive by visiting the UC Berkeley Disaster Preparedness page and following official updates from the Dean of Students Office.

(January 2025) FAQs – L.A. Fires:

Is there any flexibility in the March 3, 2025, California state priority deadline for submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) for the 2025-26 year?

Yes. The California Student Aid Commission just announced that the March 3, 2025, state financial aid application priority deadline is effectively postponed to April 2, 2025, for all high schools and colleges within Los Angeles and Ventura counties. More information and resources will be posted on the CSAC website.

If students suffered a loss of personal property from the fires and purchased a renters insurance policy through GradGuard, can they submit a claim?

Yes. The personal property coverage is worldwide and covers the students wherever they are regardless of the address on their policy.
